Before you can make a meaningful new start with a future employer, it’s often necessary to first acknowledge the loss of your current job situation. That means saying goodbye — and everyone processes that farewell in their own way. Change and letting go often stir up feelings of fear and sadness.
5 phases of change
During times of change, you often lose your sense of stability. Where are you headed? What are you losing? Will everything turn out okay? These are normal uncertainties — the inner processes happening beneath the surface. Processing is the way someone tries to find peace after a farewell. In this process, there are five phases that most people go through, either fully or partially.
Acceptance. Over time, you realize that the truth cannot be changed, and you begin to accept the loss and the accompanying grief.1. Denial. In this phase, you protect yourself by rejecting the truth. This gives you the space to absorb the reality at your own pace.
2. Anger. You protest against the change, against the dismissal. You may feel angry, cry, or shout. Often, the anger is directed at the bearer of the news or your former employer. Questions arise, such as: Why me? Why now? Thoughts of blame or revenge may follow: This is unfair or They should have handled things differently. It’s a natural psychological defense to externalize blame, focusing on fault allows you to avoid the deeper pain of loss and grief.
3. Bargaining. When anger no longer seems effective, you might try to cope with the loss by setting new goals or taking matters into your own hands in an attempt to regain control.
4. Depression. When the sadness can no longer be denied, and anger and bargaining haven’t brought relief, feelings of depression often follow. You may feel powerless and withdraw from others.
5. Acceptance. Over time, you realize that the truth cannot be changed, and you begin to accept the loss and the accompanying grief.
