The job market has been significantly impacted by COVID. Some professions have come to a complete standstill—harsh as it may sound, there’s currently no money to be made in those fields. Others are struggling to meet growing demand and have been designated by the UWV as so-called high-opportunity occupations. Irma, the sign language interpreter at the press conferences, even sparked a surge in interest in becoming a sign language interpreter.
The existing dynamics in the job market have been thoroughly shaken up. Now more than ever, it’s important for both employers and employees to reflect on what it means to employ and to be employed. This COVID period has certainly shown us that nothing can be taken for granted.
Reflect from your talents
At Dynamisch Bureau, we believe that people, both as individuals and employees, are at their best when they can do the things that truly give them energy. In other words, when they are living their talent. Live Your Talent is about tapping into the talents that come naturally to you, the ones that make you shine and feel energized.
Too often, we see organizations and employees focus on improving so-called “weaknesses”: putting great effort into raising a score of four to a barely-passing six. But whether that’s wise is highly questionable. More often than not, this approach leads to burnout, exhaustion, and team absences—followed by costly reintegration processes.
This presents a clear challenge for employers: to carefully evaluate the composition of their teams and any open vacancies. Do I have the right people on board—people who are truly playing to their strengths, complementing one another, and helping to achieve the organization’s goals, even in these difficult times? Do team members know their own talents? And do they know each other’s?
It’s essential that the talents of individual team members are fully utilized. Our TMA teamsessions can support this process. In one or more inspiring sessions, we focus on identifying the team’s talents, how those talents are distributed, what development areas exist, and we make concrete agreements on how the team can continue to excel.
But especially now, it’s also wise for individuals to reflect on their work. Are you still in the right place? Are you doing work that truly suits you? If the world suddenly changes and you had to look for a different job, what would you really want to do—something that gives you energy at work, while still leaving you with enough energy for your personal life? And if you come to the conclusion that you’re not in the right place, don’t wait it out. Take action and start working on yourself, career coaching can be a great first step.
